Lake Scugog Enhancement Project

The Lake Scugog Enhancement Project (LSEP) is an environmental and recreational improvement project. The range of benefits is broad including environmental, social, economic, tourism and recreation.

Project Description

  • A 245 m berm to contain the wetland (with a 3 m wide accessible path, park benches and 4 angling platforms)
  • 9 dredge areas, totaling 3.67 ha (9.1 acres)
  • A 14,900 m2 (3.68 ac) wetland, featuring open channel, wetland channels, pools, basking logs, vegetated hummocks, nesting features, seed mixes and native shrubs
  • A 2.09 ha (5.2 ac) aquatic vegetation management zone
  • 2 oil and grit separators to treat stormwater discharge 
  • A Fisheries Offsetting Plan
  • Post construction monitoring 

Proposed Schedule

The proposed schedule depends on having enough funding, receiving permits and approval by Township of Scugog Council.

Project Funding

Funding for the construction of the LSEP is being provided by:

  • Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations
  • Region of Durham
  • Township of Scugog Development Charges
  • Scugog Lake Stewards Fundraising
  • Township of Scugog Solar/ Environmental Reserve
  • Grant from Environmental and Climate Change Canada
  • Other grants

Purpose/ Objectives and Opportunities 

The purpose of the Project is to: 

  • Improve the recreational function of Port Perry Bay, create a healthy wetland habitat and improve water quality.

The overall objective of the project are to address the following:

  • Reduced depth of water;
  • Accumulation of sediment and organic matter;
  • Non-native aquatic vegetation;
  • Water quality in the bay;
  • Shoreline habitats and fisheries; and
  • Aesthetics and tourism-based activities. 

The Project offers the following opportunities:

  • To increase the navigable depth;
  • To increase boating access and other recreational uses such as paddling and angling;
  • To enhance stormwater treatment;
  • To reduce invasive macrophyte biomass;
  • To increase tourism; and
  • To increase fisheries productivity in Lake Scugog.
